Objectives
In times of a globally changing climate, significant variabilities are especially felt at coasts and in fluvial environments. The 2018 IGCS summer school offers the opportunity to learn about both the scientific background of these coastal and fluvial hazards, as well as the evaluation and (sustainable) management strategies which might be applied to deal with them. In collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in India, as well as the Research Institutes for Water and Waste Management (FiW) and Neotectonics and Natural Hazards (NUG) at RWTH Aachen University (Germany), we offer a programme of lectures and workshops by representative scientists and experts from India and Germany complemented with topic-related field trips in the region of Aachen.
To create a challenging atmosphere in which we can initiate an interdisciplinary Indo-German dialogue, we welcome interested students of different backgrounds to apply.
Participants
The course is open to German* and Indian Master and Ph.D. Students in academic fields of engineering, environmental and social sciences (specializiation in sustainable development is desirable). The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 30 (15 German / 15 Indian).

Application
Interested students may apply with the following: (1) a cover letter with residential contact details, a description of the applicant’s scientific interests and motivation for attending the course, (2) an academic CV, (3) contact details of an Area Coordinator, Professor, Supervisor or Head of Department for later reference (see here for list of area coordinators), (4) copy of Passport.

Evaluation of applications and admission

Funding
The IGCS–including the schools–is part of the “A New Passage to India” initiative funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Indian participants of the Summer School 2016 receive a travel grant (525 EUR), German students receive a travel reimbursement (max. 50 EUR). All students receive a per diem and lump sum for further expenses.
Accommodation
Accommodation costs will be accounted for by DAAD and will be arranged in shared rooms.
Tasks and Topics covered
The summer school students will participate in group work and practical assignments, the results of which they will have to present to their supervisors at the end of the summer school.
The lectures and practicals will deal with a variety of topics such as water management engineering, tsunami and storm hazards, inundations, ecotoxicology, organic geochemistry, remote sensing, etc.
At the end of the summer school the students will be awarded with a certificate of participation.
Lectures and workshops for the summer school will be held by renowned professors from the IGCS, IIT Madras, and RWTH Aachen University together with lecturers of the previously mentioned institutions and FiW.

Objective
Power grids across the world are in a transition phase. The need to integrate renewables, spread of power electronics in all types of applications, climate change, communication technologies, use of electric vehicles, and drive to make the system robust with power available to all are major drivers. Power grids therefore are poised to become smarter in order to be able handle all these. This winter school will look at these various aspects of smart grids. With the range of topics that will be discussed including social impact, the Winter School is aimed to provide a truly holistic view about the future growth of power grids.
Schedule
This Winter School will be a twelve day long program with talks given by experts in the field from Germany and India. Participants will also be required to do a project, in groups, on topics. German participants of the Winter School 2018 receive a travel grant (1075 EUR) and lump sum for living costs. 15 Indian Students chosen by the Selection Committee will be reimbursed to and fro 2nd Class AC fare by the shortest route from their respective present address (Institute/College/University) to Chennai, after registering/reporting for IGCS Winter School 2018. The accommodation and local hospitality will also be provided at the IIT Madras campus.
Accommodation
The selected students will be accomodated in the Taramani Guest House, IIT Madras Campus (Two per room).
Lectures
The resource personnel for the Summer School includes Faculty of IIT Madras, renown German Guest Professors from TU Dresden, TU Berlin, as well as representatives/experts from Industry.
Work Groups
Participants will work in groups of up to 4-5 members to develop small research projects, prepare reports on their findings and present them to the supervisors for discussion.
