Scholars from German universities and research institutions come to IGCS within the framework of the IGCS-DST-projects, for study purposes or specialized joint project work in all areas of sustainability related to water, waste, energy or land-use and urban development. Indian scholars join for long-term stays as postdocs or short-term stays at the German institutions involved in IGCS activites.









Dr. Monika Gonser

Monika Gonser worked as as visiting researcher at the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability at the IIT Madras in 2018. She holds a degree in social sciences and her research work focuses on issues of migration, labour market integration and corporate social responsibilty approaches. In Germany, in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg and the Centre for European Economic Research, she initiated and coordinated a real world labratory at the Heidelberg University of Education, the “Reallabor Asyl”. In such laboratories, researchers and practitioners, work on issues of local sustainability and develop science-based solutions and good practices for community based sustainability issues. Currently, she is cooperating with Professor Chella Rajan on transformative approaches in the field of migrant political participation on water provision and CSR engagement in ecology issues of local industry.




Dr Anne Gaedeke

Anne Gaedeke stayed at IGCS at IIT Madras from September 2017 to January 2018. She will be working with Prof. Chella Raja and his research team at the Department of Humanties and Social Science on the topic “Stakeholder participation in water-related climate change impact studies – a review in different geographical and social contexts”. Her study will draw on available literature, case studies (e.g. periurban Sriperumbudur), stakeholder interviews, and participant observation reports. Ms Gaedeke holds a PhD in Hydrology from the Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany. Her research has so far focused on climate change impacts (e.g. hydrology, ecology etc.) and adaptation measures in different climatic zones (e.g. temperate, subarctic and arctic environments).





Dr. Judith Bopp

Judith Bopp works on her postdoctoral project with the IGCS at IIT Madras. She stayed in Chennai from April to December 2017, joining the peri-urban transformation research cluster under Prof S. Chella Rajan at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her work is dedicated to organic farming as an opportunity for sustainable land use, nutritional improvement and community development in the peri-urban. The study involves action research with a local community in Chennai’s vicinity. Judith holds a PhD in Cultural Geography from the University of Cologne, Germany. Her thesis was set in the context of urban food production and organic food movements in Bangkok, Thailand.




Luise Haufe

Luise Haufe is a PhD scholar at FU Berlin and started her work at IGCS in September 2017. She is an urban planner and ecologist and graduated from TU Berlin. She already wrote her master thesis at IGCS, dealing with water management in Sriperumbudur. In her PhD-work she will take the topic further and work on eri (tank) systems in the peri-urban area of Chennai in the context of rapid urban growth. Her thesis will be supervised by Prof. Chella Rajan (Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras) and Prof. Dr. Brigitta Schuett, as well as Prof. Dr. Wiebke Bebermeier (Institute of Geographical Sciences, FU Berlin).




Gizem Erdogmus

Gizem Erdogmus is currently pursuing her master studies in MSc. Renewable Energy Engineering and Management at the University of Freiburg. She is writing her master thesis on the topic “Waste to Energy possibilities in Chennai City” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ligy Philip, IGCS area coordinator. She will stay in IIT Madras from September until November 2017 to conduct her research.



Tim Hohmann

Tim Hohmann is a student of M.A. Governing Sustainability at University of Applied Sciences Bremen. From July 2016 to February 2017 he has been doing course and project work at IITM and IGCS. He returned to conduct research from July to October 2017 for his thesis on sustainable peri-urban development planning and urban governance in Chennai and Sriperumbudur. His supervisors at IGCS are Prof. Christoph Woiwode and Prof. Sudhir Chella Rajan. Read more in an article by The Hindu.



Dr. Jayakumar Renganathan

Mr Renganathan´s research topic at IGB Berlin (Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries) is on antibiotic influence on aquatic biofilm community. The purpose of this study is to monitor the effects of antibiotic(s) up on its release into the environment, in particular over biofilm’s bacterial communities. The study will concentrate on the biofilm communities, as it is considered to have complex associated microbial system. The study has been designed to grown biofilm in a natural environment. More precisely, in a stream impacted by a waste water treatment plant. Thus two different communities will be grown, one adapted to antibiotics (downstream of WWT) and one not adapted to antibiotics (upstream of WWT). The grown biofilm will be transferred to laboratory based controlled condition and exposed to various concentrations of selected antibiotic(s). This lab experiment could explore whether antibiotics impact any shift in bacterial community structure, its nutrient and carbon utilization and/or its metabolism. Differences in the two different biofilm communities (adapted vs non-adapted) will be investigated. Mr Renganathan´s host is Dr. Katrin Premke, Research Group Leader, IGB Berlin.






Gangadhar Swamy, a Ph.D. student from IIT Madras, Civil Engg. Dept., group of Prof Sivanagendra. He received a scholarship to research with Prof. Uwe Schlink, Department of Urban & Environmental Sociology, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Leipzig, Germany, during September 2017. His area of research is ‘Urban vulnerability due to air quality, climate conditions and health risk assessment’. Integrating measurements made at fixed locations and gathered by mobile individuals with urban micro-meteorological simulations, Mr. Undi studies the association between urban heat island (UHI) and the formation of secondary air pollutants, such as ozone.
